Hyim Brandes and Naomi Schrager
Decades teaching (and serving as administrators) in community and yeshiva day schools, experience exploring Jewish spirituality in the high school classroom for more than two decades – Hyim Brandes and Naomi Schrager will concretize the ideas studied in this master class for classroom use, focusing on the practical takeaways for Jewish educators.

Join Master Educator Rabbi David Aaron and The Lookstein Center team in this exploration of Jewish spirituality. What do we mean by faith? By God? By Hashem? How can we inspire our students to embrace greater Hashem consciousness? How can we make limmud Torah and tefilla more meaningful and empowering? What does it really mean to live intentionally and how do we design classrooms that model that behavior?

Through illuminating texts and inspiring discussions, this series will help us reconsider Jewish spirituality from the ground up, and reimagine how to build classrooms where God is always present.

Topic 1 – How Faith Can Make or Break Us
Monday, March 17th 2025, 1:00 – 2:00 PM EST

We will reframe our understanding of God and rebuild our concept of Hashem, discovering how dramatically language shapes not only our spirituality and faith, but also current paradigms in Jewish schools and classrooms.

Topic 2 – Who is God?
Wednesday, March 19th 2025, 1:00 – 2:00 PM EST

Through an exploration of Divine names such as YKVK and Elokim we will attempt to better understand Hashem intellectually and experientially and bring Him into our classrooms. Our hope is that this will lead to a profound connection with the Infinite for ourselves and for our students.

Topic 3 – Living on Purpose: How to Serve God with Joy
Monday, March 24th 2025, 1:00 – 2:00 PM EST

We will move beyond misconceptions of servitude of God and understand how true service of God is a pathway to empowerment and joy. We will further explore questions such as: How does this play out in education? How do we create experiences of avodat Hashem that add joy and empowerment in a school setting?

Topic 4 – Torah: Learning, Living, and Loving it
Wednesday, March 26th 2025, 1:00 – 2:00 PM EST

What is Torah? How and why should we learn it? Through a close examination of the text of Birkat HaTorah, we will discover the secrets of Torah study and how this new understanding can impact Jewish studies classrooms.

Topic 5 – Making Tefillah Meaningful
Monday, March 31th 2025, 1:00 – 2:00 PM EST

What is tefillah? Together, we will move beyond the translation of “prayer” to explore the real nature of tefillah, its deeper purpose, and its transformative power. We will also explore practical suggestions for how this can impact tefillah in Jewish schools.

This master class will allow Jewish educators to take a deep dive into the foundational concepts of faith, practice, and connection to the Divine, discovering profound insights to help make their classrooms and schools more Jewishly inspired and meaningful.
