Dealing with the sins of the Avot

Dear Shalom and List:

I send out a weekly list of questions on the Parsha for my students to
answer online. In response to these questions, an 11th grade student of
mine in Bruriah wrote me a very interesting e-mail that she agreed that I
can share with the list. I think it is often helpful to hear about issues
that concern our students in their own words, so here is her e-mail:

"Gut Voch. We had a long discussion on the Parshah
today during lunch and frankly I am now quite
frustrated. You usually pick on little details and ask
for answers, but I have more general questions. For
instance-Yaakov is always held up as the paragon of
Emet and yet he deceived his father in order to get
the Brachah. My father was quite perturbed. And I said
that Yaakov was the Av that we are told exemplifies
'truth' Dafka because he was the one who deceived his
father. He had to go against HIS Midah, in order to
fulfill Hashem's Ratzon.

But I must tell you that I doubt what I told my
father. How could it have been right for him to deceive
his father?? It was a lack of Kibud Av and it was
Sheker!!!!!Hashem wants us to lie?????

Do you have any suggestions??

Unfortunately, this is not the only question I have. I
have LOTS more. Many of the stories in Bereishis are
troublesome for me because they seem to be going
against basic ideas in Judaism itself."

I know that we have addressed this topic in the past on this list but I
would love to hear any new kernels of wisdom that my esteemed colleagues
on the list can contribute to answer this young lady's questions.

Thanks once again for this wonderful forum for us to express our vexing
issues in Jewish education today.

Sincerely,
Rabbi Tzvi Pittinsky
