As more and more students participate in social networking sites, such as Facebook or MySpace — posting deeply intimate information about themselves and their friends — the potential for possible abuses increases, say observers, from cyber-bullying among peers to more grave threats from online predators.
Interviews with administrators at a dozen Jewish schools and other educational institutions in the metropolitan area reveal that the topic of online conduct is now on the front burner, as educators struggle to balance the need to protect students’ privacy and free speech, and the necessity to rein in technology’s possible detrimental effects.
And students, too, appear to be torn, craving technology’s benefits but wary of its malignant aspects, according to interviews with more than a dozen at various Jewish schools.
In Jewish schools the problem is even more thorny, as such online attacks violate not only the edicts of civility and the dictates of safety but also the teachings of Jewish values, predominantly the prohibition to partake in lashon hara, or gossip.</HTML>
