<HTML>In response to Rabbi Weinberg's concerns about rating one's teachers:
I am NOT a poseik and I believe that there ARE serious problems with
Lashon Harah and Rechilus in the "Rate your Teachers" site. However, the
site is set up respectfully and asks one to rate teachers in terms of
helpfulness, clarity, etc. It is not set up with on focus on gossip, and
there are ways to report entries that are nasty, discuss personal, rather
than professional, aspects of a teacher, etc.
However, I am not advocating using it. Besides any possible halachic
problems, I feel there is a real problem in attitude when students feel
that they have a right to rate a teacher's performance. That attitude does
not encourage the respect for teachers we are trying to develop. If a
student has trouble with a teacher, it should be handled within the
school. Rating a teacher on the Internet does not solve problems.
The only benefit I can see from such ratings are for parents looking into
a particular school. However, since teachers might move, etc. and the
ratings rarely reflect many students' perspectives, I don't think the
ratings are helpful. The only practical purpose they seem to have is for
students to vent their feelings (positive or negative).
